Communion: Faith Over Logic
“Take; this is my body…This is my blood of the [new] covenant, which is poured out for many.” – Mark 14:22-24
“Do this in remembrance of me.” – Luke 22:19
When Jesus told his followers to eat his flesh and drink his blood (see John 6:47-58), a lot of people jumped off the "Jesus-is-the-Messiah" train. Their response was honest: “This is a hard, offensive saying; who can understand it?” – John 6:60
Honestly? Not I.
Even with modern scholars and 50 Bible translations at my disposal, my mind is still often befuddled or offended by what Jesus calls me into. The "cannibal discourse" is weird. But while others walked away, the disciples responded with their hearts instead of their brains. Peter basically said, "We don't get it, but where else would we go? You have the words of eternal life."
Communion is a faith act. It’s an agreement to receive Christ; to be one with Him, even when my logic is stumped, and my nervous system is freaking out. He isn't asking for my full comprehension; He’s inviting me into a Love, a knowing, an experience of Himself far greater than my brain can fathom.
“Today if you hear His voice, harden not your heart…” – Psalm 95:7-8
Anytime the Lord asks something of us, it is so He can give us more of Himself. Don't harden your heart just because you're confused. Lean in. The instruction Jesus gave was “as often as you do this…” So, I invite you to revisit this practice in private and corporately.
We will be taking communion together this Sunday. Come get your logic stumped and your spirit enlivened.
